08 / Move with a backup

Move a private collection to a new iPhone without losing your way back.

A backup-first transfer checklist: export the right file, restore with its code, verify the new copy and keep the original until you are ready.

Keep the old phone available

Start while you can still unlock the original space. A phone replacement is a poor moment to discover that your only recovery code was inside the phone you erased. First try this workflow with a small disposable space; keep a recoverable copy of important files.

Make a fresh export for each space

In Settings, open Backup & transfer and export an encrypted backup. Save the .veil file outside the old app’s local storage and confirm it exists. Repeat for each space you need. An export is a snapshot, so edits made afterwards require another export.

Move the file and retain the matching code

Use a transfer destination you control and can reach from the new phone. Keep the recovery code separately and record which backup it belongs to. Veil supports backups below 512 MB including packaging and files up to 100 MB. A larger archive must not be assumed restorable.

Restore as a separate local space

On the new installation, open Recover access, choose the .veil backup, enter its matching recovery code and draw a new pattern with at least six dots. Finish recovery and save the newly displayed code. The restored space is independent; it is not paired with the original.

Verify before changing the original

Open representative notes, photos and documents. Lock and unlock the new space, then reopen the app and check again. Keep the original and its backup while resolving missing content. New backups of the restored space use its new recovery code; older backups still need their original code.

If restoration fails

For a wrong-code error, check that the code matches this backup and retry the selected file. If export or restoration is canceled or interrupted by locking, start again and wait for completion. Do not erase the old phone to troubleshoot a transfer. Contact support without sending your code or private files.

Recover paid access separately

Restore Purchases can recover an eligible purchase with the Apple Account used to buy it. It does not transfer your encrypted collection. Online pairing and iCloud backup are not enabled in this version; this guide covers recovery from a .veil backup file.
